How to create a GST invoice in NZ
A New Zealand tax invoice needs a few key things to be valid. Here’s the quick version — the generator above handles the maths for you.
- 1
Add your business details and GST number
Enter your business name, address and contact details. If you are GST-registered, include your GST number — a tax invoice must show it.
- 2
Add your client (the buyer)
Enter who you are billing. For supplies over NZ$1,000 (incl. GST), include the buyer’s name and address as well.
- 3
List your goods or services
Add each line with a description, quantity and unit price. The generator totals everything automatically.
- 4
Set GST to 15%
New Zealand GST is 15%. The tool calculates the GST amount and a clear GST-inclusive total for you.
- 5
Number and date the invoice
Give the invoice a unique number, set the issue date and a due date (e.g. 14 days) so it’s easy to track.
- 6
Download the PDF and keep a copy
Download your professional invoice PDF, send it to your client, and keep your own copy. GST records must be kept for 7 years.

Invoice generator — FAQ
Everything you need to know about creating free GST tax invoices in New Zealand.
Is this invoice generator really free?
Yes. The invoice generator is 100% free with no signup and no watermark. You can create and download unlimited invoice PDFs. An optional Invoice Pro membership (NZ$9/mo) adds premium templates, brand colours, quotes/receipts and saved history, but the free tool stays fully usable.
Does my data get uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib. Your details and the PDF never leave your device — there is no server and nothing is stored online. Saved sender details and clients live only in your browser’s local storage.
What is the GST rate in New Zealand?
GST in New Zealand is 15%. If you are GST-registered, your tax invoice should show the GST amount or state that the price is GST-inclusive, along with your GST number.
When do I need to register for GST in New Zealand?
You must register for GST once your turnover exceeds NZ$60,000 in any 12-month period (or you expect it to). You can also register voluntarily below that threshold. See ird.govt.nz/gst for the current rules.
What makes an invoice a valid GST tax invoice?
Taxable supply information for a tax invoice generally shows the seller’s name and GST number, the date, a description of the goods or services, and the GST amount (or a statement that GST is included). For supplies over NZ$1,000 including GST, also include the buyer’s name and address.
How long do I need to keep my invoices?
In New Zealand you must keep your GST and business records, including invoices, for at least 7 years.
Can I add my logo and choose a currency?
Yes. Upload a PNG or JPG logo and pick from NZD, AUD, USD, GBP or EUR. Sender details are remembered in your browser so the next invoice is one click away.
Can I create a quote or receipt instead of an invoice?
Yes — with Invoice Pro you can switch the document type to Quote, Estimate or Receipt, choose premium templates, set a brand accent colour, add a PAID/OVERDUE/DRAFT stamp and keep a full history of past invoices.
