Across 1,818,459 judged competition lifts, the median male deadlift is 218 kg and the median female deadlift is 130 kg. Those two numbers surprise almost everyone who hears them, and they surprise people in opposite directions. Gym lifters think they are absurdly high. Competitive lifters think they sound about right. Both reactions are correct, and the gap between them is the entire point of this article.
I built a site called WhiteLights that turns that dataset into readable strength standards. The data is the OpenPowerlifting archive, a public-domain project that records judged competition results: 1,818,459 lifts from 580,559 unique lifters across 443 federations, spanning 1964 to 2026. I did not collect any of it and I take no credit for it. What I did was cut it into percentile curves by lift, by sex and by bodyweight class so a number actually means something when you look at it.
Start with what a strength standard is. It is not a judgement and it is not a target. It is a percentile. When a standard says a lift is advanced, what it is really saying is that this lift sits above a certain share of the population being measured. On the site the tiers are defined explicitly: novice is the 0 to 20th percentile, described as the bottom fifth of the platform; intermediate is 20 to 50, below the median competitor; advanced is 50 to 80, above the median competitor; elite is 80 to 95; and world-class is 95 to 100, the top five percent of everyone who has ever competed.
Notice the phrase that keeps repeating: of the platform. This is the thing that makes the median deadlift of 218 kg make sense. Every one of those lifts was performed by somebody who entered a powerlifting competition, paid an entry fee, made weight, and had three judges rule on whether the rep counted. That is not a random sample of humans, or even of gym members. It is a sample of people who train specifically to lift heavy things and then chose to be tested on it in public. Being intermediate against that population is not the same as being intermediate against your gym, and it is nowhere near the same as being intermediate against the general public.
This is the single most common misreading of any strength chart, and it cuts both ways. People get discouraged comparing themselves to a competitive population when they never intended to compete. And people quote elite thresholds as though they describe the general population, when they describe the top fifth of a group that was already self-selected for being strong. A percentile is only meaningful when you know what it is a percentile of.
Now bodyweight, which changes everything. Strength does not scale one-to-one with size, but it absolutely scales. Muscle cross-section grows roughly with the square of linear dimensions while body mass grows roughly with the cube, which is why smaller lifters are almost always stronger per kilogram of bodyweight and larger lifters are almost always stronger in absolute terms. This is not a technicality. It is why every serious strength sport in the world runs weight classes, and it is why a single number for what counts as a strong deadlift is meaningless on its own.
The data shows this cleanly. On the men's deadlift curve, the median for lifters up to 52.5 kg is 95.0 kg. At 57.5 to 62.5 kg it is 160.0 kg. At 72.5 to 77.5 kg it is 200.0 kg, and at 87.5 to 92.5 kg it is 227.5 kg. The world-class line, the 95th percentile, moves in step: 162.5 kg for the lightest class, 260.0 kg at 72.5 to 77.5, and 287.5 kg at 87.5 to 92.5. A 200 kg deadlift is a median performance for a 75 kg man on the platform and a genuinely rare one for a 55 kg man. Same bar, same plates, completely different achievement.
The women's curve tells the same story on its own scale. Median deadlift is 105.0 kg up to 52.5 kg bodyweight, 122.5 kg at 57.5 to 62.5, 130.0 kg at 62.5 to 67.5, and 140.0 kg at 77.5 to 82.5. Because the standards are cut into 19 men's and 19 women's bodyweight classes, you can find the band you actually belong to rather than reading a chart built for somebody a lot bigger or a lot smaller than you.
It is also worth noticing how differently the four lifts sit. The median male squat is 188 kg, the median male bench press is 128 kg, the median male deadlift is 218 kg and the median male powerlifting total is 530 kg. The deadlift is consistently the biggest of the three, the bench the smallest. So somebody quoting a single impressive-sounding number without saying which lift it was has told you almost nothing. A 180 kg bench and a 180 kg deadlift are not remotely comparable performances.
Age is the third variable, and it moves the target the same way bodyweight does. Peak strength is not a constant across a life. A lift that puts a 24-year-old in the middle of the pack can be a standout for someone in their fifties, and it is the same bar either way. The site breaks results out by age percentile for exactly that reason, because comparing yourself against an open field that is dominated by lifters in their competitive prime is a good way to draw a conclusion that the data does not support.
So what should you actually do with a standards chart? Use it as a map, not a scoreboard. Find your sex, your bodyweight class and your lift, see where your current best sits on the curve, and use the next tier as a direction rather than a verdict. The curve also tells you something about pacing: moving from the 20th to the 50th percentile is a very different amount of work from moving from the 80th to the 95th, and the shape of the distribution shows you that before you find it out the hard way over two years.
One last honesty note. Every number here comes from judged raw lifts, one entry per lifter, in sanctioned competition with depth and lockout ruled on by officials. Your gym PR was almost certainly not judged to that standard. That is not a criticism of anyone, but it does mean a like-for-like comparison flatters gym numbers, and it is worth knowing before you decide the chart is wrong about you.
